Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: what do you need most right now?

1. Theoretical basis: Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory

This test is based on the 'hierarchy of needs theory' proposed by the humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943. Maslow believed that human needs are like a pyramid, divided from low to high into five levels:

  • Physiological needs: basic needs for sustaining life, such as food, water, sleep, and breathing.
  • Safety needs: personal safety, health security, ownership of resources, ownership of property, and so on.
  • Belongingness and love needs: friendship, love, family belonging, and social connection.
  • Esteem needs: self-esteem, esteem from others, a sense of achievement, recognition, and respect.
  • Self-actualization needs: fulfilling potential, realizing ideals, and becoming the best version of yourself.

Maslow believed that, under normal circumstances, lower-level needs must be partially satisfied before higher-level needs become the dominant motivation. But this order is not absolute; culture, personal experience, and values all affect the priority of needs. This test is based on this classic theory to help you understand your most urgent psychological need right now.

2. Test design approach

This test has 24 questions, designed around Maslow's five levels of needs in a situational way. The questions avoid directly asking 'do you lack a sense of security'; instead, they indirectly assess how urgent each need dimension is for you through everyday choices, emotional tendencies, and behavioral preferences.

Each question sets up a life scenario or value judgment, and your choice reflects how much you value a certain need inside. After the test, the system calculates your scores on the five dimensions based on your answers and determines your current dominant need type.

3. Interpretation of the five need dimensions

  • Physiological Need Type: focused on basic survival and material security, with high demands for comfort, stability, and abundant resources.
  • Safety Need Type: pursues stability, order, and predictability, fears change and uncertainty, and values rules and security.
  • Belongingness Need Type: longs for intimate relationships, social recognition, and group acceptance, and fears loneliness and rejection.
  • Esteem Need Type: wants to gain achievement, status, recognition, and the respect of others, and pursues a sense of self-worth.
  • Self-Actualization Type: pursues growth, creation, and fulfilling potential, and cares about a sense of meaning and personal mission.

4. Target population of the test

This test suits the following people:

  • People who feel lost and are unsure what they truly want
  • People facing difficult choices in career, emotions, or life
  • People who want to understand their deep motivations and needs
  • People interested in psychology and humanistic theory

5. Scoring method and result explanation

Each question is scored 1–5, from 'very untrue' to 'very true'. The system calculates your total score on each of the five need dimensions; the highest-scoring dimension is your current most urgent dominant need. We also provide personalized growth suggestions based on your score distribution.
