1. Theoretical Basis: Lee's Color Theory of Love

In his 1973 book The Colors of Love, Canadian sociologist John Alan Lee proposed the famous Love Styles Theory. He believed that love is not a single emotional experience but, like color, is mixed from several "primary colors". Through extensive interview research, Lee identified six basic love styles:

  • ❤️ Passionate (Eros): intense and focused, believes in love at first sight, is strongly attracted by external charm, and pursues the passion of body and mind united.
  • 💚 Game-Playing (Ludus): sees love as a game, likes to date several people at once, enjoys the process of pursuit, and is unwilling to be bound by commitment.
  • 💙 Friendship (Storge): love slowly develops out of deep friendship, valuing companionship, trust, and shared life goals.
  • 💛 Pragmatic (Pragma): rational and practical, assesses whether the partner's conditions "fit", and sees love as part of a life plan.
  • 🧡 Possessive (Mania): full of anxiety and dependence, wide emotional swings, intensely craving the other person's attention and confirmation, prone to jealousy.
  • 💜 Selfless (Agape): selfless and altruistic, puts the partner's happiness above one's own, is willing to sacrifice for love, with a religious or idealistic flavor.

Lee believed that most people are not a single type but a mix of one or two dominant styles and other secondary styles. This test will help you discover your most core love color, so you can better understand your relationship patterns and emotional needs.

2. Why Is It Important to Understand Your Love Style?

Love styles influence how we express affection, handle conflict, build commitment, and even choose a partner. Understanding your dominant style can:

  • Reduce misunderstanding and conflict in intimate relationships
  • Help you know more clearly what kind of partner you need
  • Identify unhealthy patterns in a relationship (such as over-dependence or avoidance of commitment)
  • Improve the efficiency and happiness of emotional communication

3. The Six Dimensions of This Test

This test is based on Lee's Love Styles Theory and features 20 questions drawn from real-life scenarios, measuring tendencies across six love styles:

  • Passionate (Eros): sensitivity to appearance and temperament, and longing for passionate experience.
  • Game-Playing (Ludus): acceptance of multiple relationships and the tendency to avoid commitment.
  • Friendship (Storge): how much you value companionship and the accumulation of time.
  • Pragmatic (Pragma): the tendency toward rational assessment and screening of conditions when choosing a partner.
  • Possessive (Mania): the degree of emotional dependence, anxiety, and jealousy.
  • Selfless (Agape): the tendency toward altruism, self-sacrifice, and unconditional giving.

4. Who Is Suitable for This Test?

This test is suitable for adults who want to deeply understand their own emotional patterns, especially:

  • People going through confusion or conflict in an intimate relationship
  • People who want to understand the differences in views on love between themselves and their partner
  • People interested in the psychology of emotion and interpersonal relationships
  • People who want to improve self-awareness and emotional communication skills

5. Scoring Explanation

Each question has 5 options, from "Strongly disagree" to "Strongly agree", corresponding to 1-5 points. The system calculates your total score on each of the six love styles; the type with the highest score is your dominant love style. We also provide the second-highest style as a secondary reference to help you understand your emotional tendencies more fully.
