Family Environment Scale (FES-R) | Exploring the psychological tone of your family of origin
I. What Is the Family Environment Scale?
The Family Environment Scale (FES) was developed by Moss and others and is an internationally used tool for assessing the family psychological environment. This test is adapted based on the core dimensions of the FES, aiming, from the three dimensions ofinterpersonal relationships, personality development, and system maintenance, to reveal how those 'taken-for-granted' interaction patterns subtly shaped the tone of your character.
II. How Did Home Shape You?
The family of origin not only provides survival resources, but is also a miniature 'social simulator':
- Emotional Boundaries:A family with high intimacy gives people a sense of security, while over-merging may weaken independence.
- Conflict Expression:A family with high conflict may cause an individual to develop social anxiety or defensiveness in adulthood.
- Rules and Control:Strict organization and control determine your reverence for or rebellion against rules.
III. The Three Key Dimensions of the Assessment
The adapted version of this scale is streamlined into 15 in-depth interactive questions, focusing on the following directions:
- Intimacy and Emotional Connection: The degree of mutual support, help, and commitment among members.
- Conflict and Conflict Management: The tendency of family members to openly express anger, aggression, and conflict.
- Control and Independence: The degree of rules, procedures, and mutual restriction among members in the family.
IV. About the Test Result
The test result will present you with a 'family portrait'. Please note: The family environment is dynamic, and there is no perfect family. The purpose of this test is to help you become aware of the psychological imprint left by your family of origin, so that you can achieve a better 'self-reinvention' in your adult life.
