Love Style Exploration Questionnaire | Based on John Alan Lee's Love Style Theory

I. Theoretical Foundation: John Alan Lee's Love Style Theory

This questionnaire is developed based on the Love Style Theory (The Colors of Love) proposed by Canadian sociologist John Alan Lee in 1973. The theory posits that love is not a single emotional experience, but rather consists of multiple distinct styles, each with its unique cognitive, emotional, and behavioral patterns.

Lee compared love to colors — just as primary colors can be mixed to create various colors, different love styles can also exist in different proportions in different individuals. This theory provides an important analytical framework for understanding individual differences in intimate relationships and remains one of the most influential theories in the field of love psychology to this day.

II. Questionnaire Structure and Core Dimensions

This questionnaire contains a total of 36 questions, exploring individual love style tendencies from the following 6 dimensions. All questions are lifestyle and scenario-based descriptions. Please answer according to your true feelings to obtain the most accurate assessment results:

  • Eros (Passionate Love): Values strong emotional attraction and romantic experiences, easily moved by appearance and first impressions, pursues passion and sparks in love.
  • Ludus (Game-Playing Love): Views love as a life experience, dislikes being tied down and committed, tends to maintain personal space and independence.
  • Storge (Friendship Love): Believes that love should be built on a foundation of deep friendship, values companionship, trust, and stable relationship development.
  • Pragma (Pragmatic Love): Relatively rational in relationships, comprehensively considers the compatibility of both parties' conditions, values the practical feasibility and future development of the relationship.
  • Mania (Possessive Love): Highly invested in relationships, prone to strong emotional dependence, cares about partner's attention and response, may exhibit possessiveness.
  • Agape (Selfless Love): Willing to sacrifice for the partner, values the other's feelings and needs, tends to give and support in the relationship.

Each question uses a 1-5 rating scale (1 = Strongly Disagree, 5 = Strongly Agree), with a maximum of 30 points per dimension. The higher the score, the more pronounced that style characteristic is in you. The questionnaire results will present your dominant love style and detailed scores for each dimension, along with personalized growth suggestions.

III. Score Interpretation and Style Tendencies

After completing the test, you will receive detailed scores for each dimension and a determination of your dominant style. The score intensity for each dimension is divided into four levels:

  • Very Strong (≥24 points): This style characteristic is very pronounced in you and is your core mode in love.
  • Strong (18-23 points): This style characteristic is significantly present in you and greatly influences your love choices.
  • Moderate (12-17 points): This style characteristic has some presence in you and serves as a secondary mode in love.
  • Weak (≤11 points): This style characteristic is not very evident in you and has limited influence on your love life.

In addition to the scores for each dimension, the system will also identify your dominant love style and analyze whether there are mixed characteristics of multiple styles. When two dimension scores are close, it indicates that your love style exhibits a mixed tendency, which is a very common and healthy phenomenon.

IV. Target Audience and Answering Tips

This questionnaire is suitable for individuals aged 18 and above who have had romantic experiences or are interested in exploring their own emotional patterns. It can be used for personal self-understanding, enhancing understanding between partners, as a supplementary reference in psychological counseling, and other scenarios.

When answering, please choose based on your real romantic experiences or your understanding of an ideal romantic relationship. There is no need to deliberately idealize. There are no right or wrong answers — only authenticity can help you touch your innermost true emotional tendencies. The questionnaire results are for reference only and should not be used as a basis for professional psychological assessment.
