Social Penetration Theory: Testing How to Get Into His Heart
I. What Is Social Penetration Theory?
Social Penetration Theory was proposed in 1973 by the psychologists Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor to explain how interpersonal relationships move from the surface to a deeper level.
According to the theory, building an intimate relationship is like "peeling an onion" - it is a gradual process frombreadth (the range of topics)todepth (the degree of emotional exposure). Only when both sides are willing to engage inself-disclosure, and when that disclosure receives a positive response, does the relationship truly deepen.
II. The "Onion Model" of Relationships
Social penetration theory divides the self into several layers, from the outside in:
- the public layer: interests, everyday trivia (the safest)
- the factual layer: work, study, life habits
- the attitudinal layer: values, views on things
- the core layer: deep fears, unfulfilled dreams, vulnerabilities
Whether you can get into someone's heart depends on whether you are allowed into deeper layers, and on whether you are willing to reveal your own inner layers in step.
III. The Four Dimensions of This Test
This test is based on social penetration theory and the self-disclosure model. It has 18 items and assesses the likelihood and path of building a deep connection with him along four dimensions:
- Willingness to disclose (Breadth): Are you willing to take the initiative to share topics from different areas?
- Depth exploration (Depth): Do you dare to touch on exchanges at the emotional and value level?
- Perceived reciprocity (Reciprocity): Do you feel the other person's response and reciprocal disclosure?
- Boundary sensitivity (Boundary): Do you know how to respect the pace and avoid intruding too much?
IV. Who Is This Test For?
This test is for people who are developing a relationship and want to deepen mutual understanding:
- Those who secretly like someone and want to know how to close the distance naturally
- Those in an ambiguous stage, unsure whether the other person wants to go deeper
- Those who feel the relationship has stalled and want to break out of a "polite but distant" state
- Those who want to improve their ability to nurture intimate relationships
V. Scoring and Interpretation of Results
Each item is scored 1-5, representing a range from "completely untrue" to "completely true". Based on the combination of scores across the four dimensions, the system determines your current stage of relationship penetration and gives specific action suggestions.
