The career anchor is a well‑known career development theory proposed by Professor Edgar H. Schein of the MIT Sloan School of Management. It refers to the most essential, non‑negotiable inner value or driving force that a person will never give up when faced with career choices. Like an anchor that holds a ship in place, your career anchor keeps your professional life centered around a specific core area regardless of external turbulence. It is the crystallization of your self‑awareness, gradually formed and clarified through your past work experiences, successes, failures, and external feedback.
A clear career anchor can answer the following three core questions:
- What am I truly good at? (Abilities)
- What do I really want to do? (Motivation)
- What makes me feel most fulfilled? (Values)
II. The Theory Behind This Test: Schein's Eight‑Dimensional Career Anchor Model
After decades of follow‑up research, Professor Schein initially proposed five career anchors, later expanded into the classic eight types. The theory holds that each person's career orientation falls into one of these eight types—or a combination of one or two. These eight anchors represent eight fundamentally different career drivers and definitions of success.
- Technical/Functional Competence: Desire to continuously deepen expertise in a specific professional field and become an irreplaceable expert. They pursue technical depth and professional recognition.
- General Managerial Competence: Desire to take on comprehensive management responsibility, integrate multiple resources, and achieve a sense of accomplishment and power by leading teams to organizational goals.
- Autonomy/Independence: Desire to work according to one's own methods, pace, and standards, free from the constraints of organizational rules and processes, pursuing maximum professional freedom.
- Security/Stability: Pursue a predictable, stable work environment and reliable security, regarding economic safety and job‑life stability as the primary goal.
- Entrepreneurial/Creativity: Desire to create one's own business, product, or service, enthusiastic about innovation and risk‑taking, defining success by building wealth and leaving a legacy.
- Service/Dedication to a Cause: Strive to improve the world, serve others, or defend core values in some way. The meaningfulness of work far outweighs fame and fortune.
- Pure Challenge: Enthusiastic about solving seemingly insurmountable problems, defeating formidable competitors, and overcoming great obstacles. "Impossible" is their only stimulant.
- Lifestyle: Seek overall balance and integration between work, personal life, and family. They believe success is not just career achievement, but happiness as a complete human being.
III. What This Test Measures & How It Is Scored
This assessment includes 80 carefully designed situational simulation and behavioral preference questions, fully covering the eight career anchor dimensions with 10 questions per dimension. The questions use a 7‑point Likert scale (1 = "strongly disagree", 7 = "strongly agree"). You need to complete the evaluation based on your truest inner feelings and thoughts, not external expectations.
After completing the test, the system calculates a total score for each dimension (maximum 70 points). The one or two dimensions with the highest scores constitute your current core "career anchor." Your career type is named by combining these high‑score dimensions, for example, "Technical/Functional," "Service · Lifestyle," or "Managerial · Challenge."

- The Pioneer Creator: Centered on the Entrepreneurial/Creativity anchor. You are a natural creator, constantly driven by a strong impulse to build new things and new models.
- The Torchbearer of Service: Centered on the Service/Dedication anchor. You are a natural value driver; the core purpose of your work is to benefit others, society, or a higher ideal.
