Workplace Self-Promotion Test | Assess Your Managing-Up and Self-Presentation Strategy

1. What Is Workplace Self-Promotion Ability?

Workplace self-promotion ability is not simple 'bragging.' In an organizational setting, it is the comprehensive ability to clearly recognize your own value and convey it in an appropriate way to key decision makers (such as your superiors) so as to gain resources, opportunities, or recognition.

It is not just about 'what you did,' but about 'how you let others know what you did.' This ability directly affects promotion speed, project involvement, and career security.

2. Theoretical Basis: Self-Efficacy and Impression Management

This test is built mainly on two classic psychological theories:

  • Bandura's self-efficacy theory (Self-Efficacy): the belief in one's own ability to complete a task. People with high self-efficacy are more likely to actively pursue opportunities and show greater persuasiveness when promoting themselves.
  • Impression management theory (Impression Management): proposed by Erving Goffman, it refers to the process by which individuals try to control the impressions others form of them. At work, this means consciously displaying professional skills, teamwork, or leadership rather than passively waiting to be discovered.

3. The Four Core Dimensions of This Test

To fully assess your workplace self-promotion ability, we designed the following four dimensions, 20 questions in total:

  • Value Recognition Acuity: Are you clear about your core strengths? Can you turn daily work results into quantifiable value?
  • Timing and Context Awareness: Do you know how to present yourself at the right moments (such as reports, retrospectives, or crises)? Or do you show off regardless of the occasion?
  • Expression Strategy Maturity: Do you lean toward 'credit-claiming' bragging or 'results-oriented' statements? Can you balance confidence with humility?
  • Risk Tolerance and Initiative: Facing competition or uncertainty, do you step back and watch, or dare to volunteer yourself?

4. Purpose and Intended Audience

This test is for professionals who want greater visibility at work, especially:

  • Professionals who feel their talents go unrecognized despite hard work
  • Employees facing promotion defenses, annual reviews, or competition for key positions
  • Team members who want to improve managing up and their relationship with superiors
  • Managers who want to shed the 'nice guy' label and build professional influence

5. Scoring

Each question is scored 1-5, from 'not at all like me' to 'exactly like me.' Based on your weighted scores across the four dimensions, the system determines your workplace 'self-promotion style' and offers targeted improvement tips.
