Best-Fit Job Test | Based on the Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment

I. What Is the Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment?

The Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment (MTWA) was proposed by American psychologists Lofquist and Davis and is one of the most influential theories in vocational psychology.

The theory holds that job satisfaction and job stability depend on the two-way fit between the "person" and the "environment". This fit involves two core dimensions:

  • Ability-requirement fit: Do you have the abilities the role requires?
  • Need-reward fit: Does the work environment satisfy your inner needs?

Only when "you are suited to the work" and "the work also satisfies you" is it easier to achieve long-term, stable career happiness.

II. What Does a Healthier Career State Look Like?

A healthy career state is usually not about "earning the most" or "holding the highest position", but rather having the following traits:

  • You can play to your strengths at work instead of constantly patching weaknesses
  • The content of the work aligns with the values you hold dear
  • The pace and environment feel sustainable rather than chronically draining
  • You are willing to invest time and energy in this work

III. The Four Dimensions Assessed by This Test

Based on the Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment, we break career fit into four key dimensions, with 18 questions in total:

  • Ability Aptitude: In which types of tasks are you more likely to excel?
  • Work Value Preference: What rewards at work do you value more? (security, achievement, freedom, influence, etc.)
  • Environment and Pace Fit: Are you better suited to a stable structure or a flexible, changing workplace?
  • Interpersonal and Collaboration Style: In a team, do you lean toward independent execution or deep collaboration?

IV. Purpose and Target Audience

This test is suitable for:

  • People considering a career change or re-planning their career direction
  • People who are dissatisfied with their current job but unclear why
  • Professionals who want to improve their career satisfaction and stability
  • Students or recent graduates who want to understand their career fit in advance

V. Scoring and Results

Each question is scored from 1 to 5, from "strongly disagree" to "strongly agree". The system calculates your scores across the four dimensions and, combined with your overall fit, summarizes the career type that suits you best along with tailored recommendations.
