Who Are You Playing? Self-Impression Management Assessment | Explore Your Social Mask and True Self

I. What Is Self-Impression Management?

Impression management, also called self-presentation, is the process by which we try to control the impression others form of us in social situations. It is not a negative thing - adaptive impression management helps us fit into environments and communicate. But when management strategies become internalized as habitual pretense, we may become disconnected from our true feelings and fall into the confusion of 'who am I really?'

Healthy impression management involves three core abilities:

  • Situational awareness - keenly understanding the unspoken rules of different settings
  • Expressive flexibility - adjusting your words and actions without losing self-consistency
  • Authenticity monitoring - having clear awareness of a 'sense of performing'

II. Impression Management Is a Continuum

This test does not simply divide impression management into 'good/bad', but helps you see where you stand on the continuum:

  • Low impression managers (Pure Type) - highly consistent inside and out, but may encounter social friction because of low situational sensitivity
  • Moderate impression managers (Adaptive Type) - can flexibly adjust their presentation while keeping a core sense of self, the healthy zone for most people
  • High impression managers (Mask Type) - overly focused on others' judgment, easily leading to self-alienation and emotional exhaustion

III. The Four Exploration Dimensions of the Test

15 questions in total, covering the deep motives and behavioral patterns of impression management:

  • Audience Awareness - To what extent do you adjust yourself based on 'who is watching'?
  • Concealment Tendency - Do you often hide your true emotions or views?
  • Strategic expression - Do you deliberately use language or image to achieve a specific aim?
  • Self-Alienation - When playing the role others expect, do you feel tired or empty?

Together, these four aspects sketch out your impression management style and point to the balance between 'adaptive socializing' and 'survival by mask'.

IV. Why Is It Worth 10 Minutes?

  • people who often feel they are 'acting' and, after work, just want to switch off and be quiet
  • thinkers who want to improve their social flexibility but fear losing their true self
  • people who feel unclear about their workplace role, family role, and self-identity
  • all explorers interested in 'how a person stays authentic in relationships'

V. Scoring

Each question is scored 1-5, from 'Not true of me at all' to 'Very true of me'. Some items are reverse-scored. Finally, based on your total score and dimension pattern, the test presents your type on the impression management spectrum and offers specific 'authenticity anchor' practice suggestions.
