Machiavellianism Test | Are You a Strategist or an Idealist?
1. What Is Machiavellianism?
Machiavellianism comes from the thought of the Renaissance political thinker Niccolò Machiavelli. In modern psychology, it is one of the key components of the 'Dark Triad.' It isn't the same as 'evil'; it's a results-oriented personality trait that emphasizes strategic thinking and a tendency toward interpersonal manipulation.
People high in Machiavellianism usually show the following: they are rational and calm, skilled at manipulation, less swayed by emotion, and in competition tend to use strategy rather than moral constraints to gain an advantage; while those who score low value integrity, cooperation, and emotional connection more.
2. Theoretical Basis: The Dark Triad
In 2002, the psychologists Delroy Paulhus and Kevin Williams proposed the famous 'Dark Triad' theory, holding that three subclinical personality traits often coexist:
- Machiavellianism: strategic manipulation and instrumental coldness
- Narcissism: self-centeredness and a craving for admiration
- Psychopathy: impulsivity and a lack of empathy
This test focuses on the Machiavellianism dimension, helping you recognize whether, in your interpersonal interactions, you lean more toward 'strategic calculation' or 'sincere cooperation.'
3. The Five Dimensions of This Test
Based on psychological research, we broke Machiavellianism down into five observable behavioral tendencies and designed 18 scenario questions in total:
- Strategic Deception: Do you hide or distort the facts when necessary to achieve a goal?
- Emotional Detachment: Can you set aside emotional interference and stay rational when making decisions?
- Instrumental Exploitation: Do you see relationships as a means to an end?
- Moral Flexibility: Does your adherence to rules and morals shift with the situation?
- Power Orientation: Do you tend to control the situation and take a dominant position?
4. Purpose of the Test and Who It's For
This test suits people who want to understand their interpersonal strategy style. It's especially for:
- Managers and entrepreneurs who want to find a balance between competition and cooperation
- People who often take part in negotiations, games, or team decisions
- People interested in human nature and social psychology
- People who want to improve their self-awareness and avoid unconsciously manipulating others
5. How Scoring Works
Each question is rated from 1 to 5, from 'strongly disagree' to 'strongly agree.' Based on your scores across the five dimensions, the system comprehensively assesses your Machiavellian tendency and gives you a corresponding personality type and behavioral advice.
