Forgiveness and Tolerance Test | Explore Your Emotional Letting-Go Ability and Boundaries of Interpersonal Tolerance
I. What Are Forgiveness and Tolerance?
Forgiveness is not weakness, nor an endorsement of harmful behavior, but apsychological process of actively releasing resentment and letting go of the urge for revenge. Tolerance, by contrast, refers more to the degree to which one accepts others' differences, flaws, or minor offenses.
Theforgiveness process modelproposed by psychologist Robert Enright holds that forgiveness usually goes through four stages: acknowledging the harm → making the decision to forgive → developing empathy → discovering the meaning of forgiveness. Tolerance, meanwhile, is closely related to an individual'scognitive flexibilityandemotion regulation ability.
II. What Are Relatively Healthy Forgiveness and Tolerance?
Healthy forgiveness is neither compromise without limits nor the suppression of anger; healthy tolerance is not swallowing your grievances either. They have the following characteristics:
- Being able to separate 'behavior' from 'personality' and not dismissing the whole person over a single offense
- After being hurt, being able to recognize and express emotions rather than suppressing them long-term
- Being able to set interpersonal boundaries, protecting oneself without falling into a cycle of hatred
- Choosing to let go at the right moment, in order to protect one's own mental health
III. The Four Assessment Dimensions of This Test
Based on the psychology of forgiveness and emotion regulation theory, this test assesses your capacity for tolerance across four dimensions:
- Emotional reaction after an offense: Are you more prone to falling into anger or shame, or to recovering quickly?
- Type of forgiveness motivation: Do you forgive out of altruism, self-liberation, or conditionally?
- Grudge-holding and rumination tendency: Do you repeatedly replay hurtful events and find it hard to let go?
- Interpersonal boundaries and tolerance threshold: How much do you accept others' mistakes, and where is your bottom line?
IV. Purpose of the Test and Who It Is For
This test is suitable for people who want to improve their emotion management skills and their relationships, and is especially suited to:
- people who often feel emotionally drained by interpersonal conflict and find it hard to let go
- people who want to reduce negative emotions and improve their psychological resilience
- people who easily accumulate resentment in intimate relationships or at work
- people interested in the psychology of emotion and the mechanisms of repairing relationships
V. Scoring
There are 18 questions in total, each scored 1-5, from 'Very untrue of me' to 'Very true of me'. The system will calculate your scores across the four dimensions and, together with your total score, determine your forgiveness and tolerance type, and provide targeted psychological adjustment advice.
