Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) | Exploring the Depth of Psychological Androgyny
1. What Is the Sex Role Inventory?
Designed by American psychologist Sandra Bem in 1974, the BSRI is a major milestone in the history of psychology. It challenged the traditional view that masculinity and femininity are opposite poles, proposing instead that these two dimensions are independent of each other.
This means a person can be highly 'masculine' (e.g., independent and decisive) and highly 'feminine' (e.g., gentle and caring) at the same time. This combination of traits is called'Psychological Androgyny'.
2. The Four Quadrants of Results
Based on scores on both dimensions, the test classifies respondents into four psychological types:
- Androgynous: Combining high levels of both masculine and feminine traits, typically showing stronger social adaptability and psychological flexibility.
- Masculine: Higher in instrumental traits such as leadership, competitiveness, and independence.
- Feminine: Higher in expressive traits such as compassion, sensitivity, and the ability to build emotional connections.
- Undifferentiated: Lower scores on both dimensions, possibly still in a period of exploring self-identity.
